The effect of transection of the duck blastoderm on the orientation of the embryo.

چکیده

Von Baer (1828) formulated a rule according to which the cephalo-caudal axis is perpendicular to the long axis of the shell, and the head of the embryo is directed forwards when the egg is placed with the blunt end to the left. This law has been checked in several species of bird: hen, duck, pigeon, goose, turkey (see Clavert, 1960, for references) and quail (Fargeix, 1963, 1964). Embryos obeying von Baer's rule were found to constitute the most numerous class, but considerable interspecific as well as intraspecific differences were observed. The studies by Lutz (1949) supply extensive information on the regulative capacities of the duck blastoderm, but do not provide any data concerning the determination of the presumptive axis of the blastoderm. The control material of this author revealed a large percentage of embryos obeying von Baer's rule. In consequence Lutz defines transections perpendicular to the long axis of the shell as 'parallel to the presumptive axis', and transections parallel to the long axis as 'perpendicular to the presumptive axis'. Vakaet (1962), however, has already drawn attention to the fact that transection of the duck blastoderm does to a certain extent affect the orientation of twin embryos. The experiments presented below further investigate this observation, the direction of transection affecting the orientation of the embryonic axis even in cases in which only one embryo developed.

Primordial germ cells in normal and transected duck blastoderms.

Suggestive evidence for the extragonadal origin of germ cells in birds was first presented by Swift (1914), who described primordial germ cells in the chick embryo at as early a stage as the primitive streak. According to Swift, primordial germ cells are originally located extra-embryonically in the anterior part of the blastoderm and occupy a crescent-shaped region ('germinal crescent') on the...

I-19: Surrogate Egg Shell Culture for The Analysis of Avian Stem Cell Fate

Background: The chick embryo is a classical model to study embryonic development. However, most researchers have not studied the effect of embryonic manipulation on chick hatchability. To determine the effect of egg orientation and type of sealing film on the hatchability of cultured embryos, and to determine the fate of adulte stem cells injected into the blastoderm. Materials and Methods: Win...

The Development of Somites in the Chick Embryo.

1. The 'somite centres*. Spratt (1955) put forward the idea that two 'somite centres' exist in the chick blastoderm and that these actively induce the formation of somites. His evidence is based mainly on a series of transection experiments. 2. HenserCs node. This theory is based on the results of experiments in which the node is damaged or extirpated (e.g., Peebles, 1898; Wetzel, 1929; Fraser,...

Effect of Acyclovir on the Viability of Chicken Embryo During the Developmental Stage

Objective: In recent years, antiviral drugs have been used widely in the glob to prevent and treat viral diseases. They injected into eggs to eliminate pathogens and prevent of egg transmission of disease, but the adverse effects of drugs have always been a major concern. There is little information available about the safety of antiviral drugs in the embryonated eggs of birds. The objective of...
